Keywords in job descriptions
If you look at enough job advertisements you will notice a set of commonly used keywords and phrases. “Are you a self-starter? Results oriented? Dynamic? Driven? Innovative? “
These keywords are repeated frequently because it is difficult to include all the requirements and desired qualities of an employee in a short advertisement. However, don’t dismiss these because of overuse. The words and phrases in job advertisements can provide much insight into the role, culture and expectations of the company.
Keywords in your CV
Studies show that recruiters and hiring managers spend as little as 7 seconds reviewing a CV before placing them in the “yes” or “no” pile, most often dismissing CV’s filled with meaningless keywords.
To make it to the “yes” pile, you need to choose keywords that count, those that describe your abilities, match the job description and show that you are a better fit for the position than other candidates.
Focus on what you have to offer. What you can do for the organisation? What you can do better than any other candidate? How your previous experience reflects that. Answer these questions and then find keywords and action verbs to best describe what you have to offer.
Research the company that you are applying to and read the company mission statement. Look for keywords related to your skills and experiences that are sought by the company. Search for other job listings with the same title in similar industries and match your list with skills that may have inadvertently been left out of the job advertisement but still apply to the job and the industry.
Including the correct keywords in your CV will greatly increase your chances of your CV making it through the Applicant Tracking Systems and actually being read by the hiring manager or recruiter.
Share your story
Whilst keywords are essential to get you past the first filter, it is necessary to show that you have what it takes for the position. Focus your CV on your abilities to solve problems and achieve goals. Look for ways to demonstrate times that you have done this.
